Russia is Mordor, but Independent.
It has been twenty years. The great V. V. Putin has become the Emperor of the Great Russia, and protected Russian sovereignty from the greedy claws of the foreign petrochemical giants.
Except, he neglected, or allowed, or knowingly handed Russia to his own bureaucrats. These guys have no talents of running a business, much less a municipality, so they pocket billions of rubles, euros, dollars, and export Russia's capital to build their own villas, buy their own vineyards, and open their own nest egg accounts at exclusive wealth management banks like the ones in Zug, Switzerland.
Even a manager of city's garbage disposal service is a millionaire, while the city is brimming with garbage and falling apart.
Mordor is the realm of the arch-villain Sauron.

Summary of Russians intercepting SR-71's
All the billions of taxpayer dollars that we sank into SR-71, only to operate it as a high-speed party crasher (ref. having it fly over dictators' palaces and parades). The Soviets, of course, knew it was coming hours in advance, without any need to have a spy in place either in USAF command or as a landscaping contractor near its air base.
Here is a rough translation of an email from a Russian communication intelligence specialist recalling the ease of detecting the SR-71. What a crude use of such a fine machinery!
"As far as the SR-71 in transit, I have none [i.e., data of my own - blog], however, several of them are over Barents Sea, for example, as Blimey 99, at 17:16 according to the the time marker. Opus 38, at 26:08, communicates through Gold 23 (KC-135), Croughton [RAF base - blog] does not hear, but we in Kaluga - 5 AUs. One of the best ways to ID them is their mentioning of the real time GMT:
Op's normal at 34while RC-135, TR-1 и U-2 communicate in the 4-digit format: 0834.
[Other telltale signs] are of course, the pilot's voice, stifled by the high altitude pressure suit, the typical background noise of the radio, the Barents triangulation, then Baltics, and the KC-135Q modified for high altitude refueling, loitering along its [SR-71] route.
It always felt pleasantly reassuring to know that it was escorted by Mig-25, so it would never get lost or get bored.
[SR-71] always presented real danger, since in an hour that it spends over Barents Sea, it always detected all of our mobile SA launchers and could have directed a strike against them. We did not have the mobile launchers like the S-300, so we had to redeploy to other sites, and that was hours of hard work. That is why the main countermeasure against it was to guess its ETA, to turn off all the mobile systems, and leave only the fixed sites. Then the Dumb Yanks would come the next day, a different aircraft, and there were two of them at Mildenhall in England.
After the flight, this machine was not so reliable. Its speed up to 3200 and the latitude 25000 [was something]. One time it experienced a malfunction upon exiting Barents area, barely limped to Norway, the the HC-130 rescue was deployed, the helicopters. A week after it flew over to England, and ion another 2 weeks back home to Edwards [AFB], Nevada, all the while, by an unusual track - the way of SR only - not over the Atlantic, but over the [North] Pole and Canada, the way he reported through radio comm.
Let me know if anything not clear here, I will explain, just let me know the call sign and time of comm. Even though it has been 21 years, I still remember almost all."
е. Op's normal at 34,

According to the Int'l law, hostile use or blocking of straights constitutes valid casus belli, as was recognized for Israel in the 6 Days War, re. the straights of Tiran. Besides the natural economic (also the pipelines running through Ukraine, that bring hydrocarbons to Europe,) and safety buffer from Europe, Russia wants natural access to its Crimea, which it conquered after being attacked by Turkey, and again reconquered from the UK-led EU forces in the Crimean war of 1850, precipitated by the EU trying to block Russia from accessing the Med, and its real estate in the prime area of Jerusalem.

| A rare photo op where two Soviet era BTRs associated with the Soviets in Afghanistan - under way, and under different flags! |
US and Turkey have hinted at blocking Russia exclusively from exiting the Black Sea, going back to the Kennedy's Cuban crisis. US Ambassadors from that era, writing memoirs ascribe the Cuban crisis being precipitated by USSR placing the missiles in Cuba to get leverage over US to guarantee the safe passage out of the Black Sea. Today Turkey still tries to get any leverage on Russia, now the true and tried Moslem card - there is a Moslem minority in Crimea, which must have the same rights as their freedom loving brothers in Chechnia, Lybia, Gaza, Egypt, and Syria. "Maybe these Moslems can be a convenient political pressure group" I saw this months ago in news headlines, before the Ukrainian revolt. I think Putin knew all of these factors, and let US NGOs roil the Ukrainians, waited out the Olympics, and made the move.
meanwhile, there is an item of that northern passage to the White Sea always brewing between US and Russia. It is wider than the double of 6 km of territorial waters which would allow Russia to claim as its home waters, but US has always penetrated into the White Sea, causing submarine collisions. Throughout history, as Putin pointed out reminding the world of the US/EU-like landing, USSR nor Russia never even closed the passage. Russians equated the case with the Great Lakes, "how would US feel if St. Lawrence river was more than 6 km wide and Russian subs showed up in Chicago?"

| Good point: Kiev - free(zing) Europeans Moscow - slaves of the regime. |
Russia also cares about Ukraine as its spiritual cradle. Ukrainian lang. is very close to Russian. Kiev is the cradle of Russian history. Ukrainians grow up speaking both languages, Russian first. It is more like Massachusetts, which speaks funny, but is so organic to US, and is just funny to imagine quitting the US. Ukrainians sound funny trying to speak Ukrainian only. Most Ukrainians think they are entitled to have Russian citizenship, and feel bad because politically the countries want to be separate. The western Ukrainians are more polish, hungarian, etc nationally, and identify with the Ukrainian Nazis who have been documented to massacre Russians, Russian-speaking Ukrainians, and Jews for the past 100 years.

Reality Check On Crimea
The West should redo its homework. Crimea has always been an integral part of Russia. It took a Ukrainian (Khrushchev) to transfer the peninsula over to the Ukraine. Since it was an act of a Soviet governmental political mechanism, it appears that after the fall of the Soviet Union, the surprisingly real-estate-like deed could be considered null and void. Moreover, Russia, the internationally recognized caretaker for all matter and obligation left over from the Soviet era, is the rightful authority on the disposition of the decisions by USSR's government. Then it makes sense that now, Russia, and Crimean Russians, have the right to decide the ultimate state of the peninsula.
It is also a double standard: the US has the right to put together a posse and invade faraway countries, but Russia cannot repossess its rightful possession with its own ethnicity. Not fair.
The poster is cute and poignant, but a reminder of fairness which Putin pointed out: during the most dangerous moments of Cold War, USSR (Russia) never used oil to blackmail the West. Unlike the Moslems with their petro-tantrums.

Common Wisdom About The Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.
spirit1st
Allah, the god revealed in the Quran, is not a loving father. It says that he desires to lead people astray (Surah 6:39 , 126). He does not help those who are led astray by him (Surah 30:29) and desires to use them to populate hell (Surah 32:13).

Hillary Clinton has just released a statement on the missing plane, It reads "What difference does it make at this point".

According to the latest Al Gore statement the plane was caught up in extreme winds that blew it off course and excessive heat that disabled it's systems, both due to Global warming.

a leaderless and failing US press is nearly hysterical over a plane crash that has nothing to do with america!! even Malaysia is having more trouble with their meddling than finding the plane!!

A muslim pilot and copilot, what could possibly go wrong?
and I add: the plane has landed on a dusty landing strip in some central Asian country, all of its officials bribed and child abusers, to repaint the plane in the nap-of-the-earth camouflage. It will be fueled up, flown low, its next targets - one of the skyscrapers in Dubai, Moscow or Tel Aviv.

State of the Gold Prices and World Affairs
February 28, 2012...FASCINATING @ 10:34 am
I can't imagine paying $5.00 even in debauched dollars – $0.15 in pre Nix currency. Right now $4.00 per Gal it makes sense for me to consider to get on my bike and pedal 20 blocks to my Chevy Volt parked by the charging station. Situation being – Ossified (possibly conflicted) Con Edison Management dragging its feet in installing charging stations on residential streets. Ain't that cooked yet. Remember 16 Kw battery is 40 miles of fun or work or Etc. Then you run the gas engine just for nostalgia.

Area 51 on Wikimapia, A Test For Conspiracy Theories
I wanted to check the proportion if not the number of gullible people on Wikimapia who look at the Area 51. So I signed in as a Guest and marked up two areas inside the Area 51, one that looked like a parking lot a Kukla Pen, and a hangar next to a dining area as the Moscow River project site.
Soon it got what it deserved. A Russian self-styled conspiracy expert (username FIJN) has compiled his opinions on my nebulous sites into his web project. I see from the latest visits that his comment was deleted.
I have dropped in on the Wikimapia view several times for the past 5 years, as can be seen from the comment window, and responded to the deleted comments (as Randy, Amalfic and others), some of which got deleted as well. So I decided to document my commenting, by grabbing a screen shot:

Of course the further explanation of KUKLA PEN as a CIA codename is also hogwash, but that was in response to several Russian comments indicating that the infinite subterfuge of the evil USA is capable of anything, and the world is going to witness quite a surprise of something military happening (think Matthias Rust) downtown Moscow.
These sites that were total spur of the moment decision to test the lunacy and the internet as a whole, garnered a plentiful harvest of search results which point to various opinions and sensationalism as well as conspiracy theories cooked with the most insane powers of deduction - just a sample:

Boston, Israeli Flag, and Chechen Pain
Infowars-like scholars would say:
"Isn't it too coincidental that there were tons of medics and police on hand, and it all happened under the flag of Israel?"
CNN-like news agency would say:
"The fact that the Chechen brothers were involved in the Boston bombing and the killing of the MIT policeman testifies to the intolerance of the world toward the noble and freedom-loving people of Chechnya... having to suffer under the iron-fisted hegemony of the ex-KGB officer."
(Chechnya is just one of hundred or so Caucasus ethnicities fighting each other, Russia and Vlad Putin - ABC News.)

review of Arab culture of regression
• The total number of books translated into Arabic in the last 1,000 years is fewer than those translated into Spanish in one year.
• Greece – with a population of fewer than 11 million – translates five times as many books from abroad into Greek annually as the 22 Arab countries combined, with a total population of more than 300 million, translate into Arabic.
• According to a Council on Foreign Relations report, "In the 1950s, per-capita income in Egypt was similar to South Korea, whereas Egypt's per-capita income today is less than 20 percent of South Korea's. Saudi Arabia had a higher gross domestic product than Taiwan in the 1950s; today, it is about 50 percent of Taiwan's."
As Dr. A.B. Zahlan, a Palestinian physicist, has noted: "A regressive political culture is at the root of the Arab world's failure to fund scientific research or to sustain a vibrant, innovative community of scientists." He further asserted that "Egypt, in 1950, had more engineers than all of China." That is hardly the case today.
The UN Human Development Report reveals that only two Egyptians per million people were granted patents, compared to 30 in Greece and 35 in Israel (for Syria, the figure was zero).
Similarly, the adult literacy rate for women aged 15 and older was 43.6 percent in Egypt and 74 percent in Syria, while for the world's top 20 countries it was nearly 100 percent.
And finally, according to Freedom House rankings, no Arab country in the Middle East is listed as "free." Each is described as "partly free" at best, "not free" at worst.
The sad truth is that it is precisely political oppression, intellectual suffocation, and gender discrimination that explain, far more than any other factor, the chronic difficulties of the Middle East.

The Souther-Orlov Famous Unknown Spy
His father was a middle-class businessman. His parents divorced when he was four years old, and he was raised by his mother. In 1975 he studied at a university, but after six months dropped out. Upon joining the USN he studied at the The Naval Marine Intelligence Training Center (NMITC)'s Photography Interpretation School under gaining command, at the end of which was assigned to the 6 th Fleet U.S. Navy.
From 1977 to 1982, Glenn Souther served in a FICLANT unit (Fleet Intelligence Command Atlantic) of the 6 th U.S. Navy based in Italy, handled the public relations, and was the personal photographer to the fleet commander Admiral Crowe. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, then on the command and control ships USS Albany and USS Puget Sound.
From 1983 to mid 1986 Souther was studying for his commissioning at the University of Old Dominion ROTC in Norfolk, and also served as a reservist at the U.S. Naval Base in Norfolk, where he had access to materials related to US space program.
Since his youth Souther was interested in the culture of the Soviet Union, loved to read Vladimir Mayakovsky, and read Marx. He has formed his own view of the world, which he wished was ruled by justice, equality, supremacy of collectivism over individualism.
In accordance with his convictions in 1980 Souther asked the Soviet embassy in Rome for help in obtaining Soviet citizenship. He did not ask for political asylum, did not indicate any harassment by U.S. authorities. Boris Solomyatin, the KGB resident in Rome, recalls how he recruited Souther: "No, he did not nurture the decision to betray his country - he wanted to find a new one. Souther did not even consider the nature of his service in the U.S. Navy to be secret.
Souther went on to serve on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, and other warships, and he handled top secret secret documents and imagery. Therefore, the Soviet intelligence services were very interested in Souther and offered him help in obtaining citizenship in exchange for secret information. However, after he flatly refused material compensation for their services, they suspected him to be really working for U.S.
Information received from Glen Souther was genuine, sensitive and extremely important.
In Moscow my friends have found a treasure trove of US Naval documentation whith acronyms and serial numbers pointing to the commands and to the time frame of Souther's access. Note this as a catalog of publications turned over to the KGB:
More to follow, of course.
Souther was placed under surveillance, which lasted about a year, but has not produced success. He has repeatedly briefed at a local FBI office, where he first talked about his views on the world, the USSR, the Soviet culture. Later he was summoned for more questioning, which also yielded nothing. Souther was asked to undergo lie detector test, conducted according to the standards of the FBI, not the Navy's more scrupulous methodology. Because of the threat of arrest June 9, 1986 Souther booked a flight on an Alitalia flight, with a return ticket to the USA, flew to Rome, where the Soviet secret service transferred him to Moscow.
Life in the USSR
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on October 2, 1986 he was officially granted Soviet citizenship. He chose a new name of Michael E. Orloff. The application for citizenship Souther wrote: "With all the responsibility that the U.S. government will never do nothing of sincere and honest intentions to establish peace on earth until, until you are firmly convinced of its total military superiority. U.S. contempt has taken and continues to endanger the fate of other nations.
Orlov-Souther was the only foreign-born agent of Russian intelligence service who received the official title of a KGB officer. He was conferred the rank of a Major. He was given an apartment in Moscow and a dacha in the suburbs.
June 22, 1989 as a summer cottage Orlov wrote several suicide notes, went into the garage, shut all doors and windows and started the engine. His wish was to be buried wearing the uniform of a KGB officer. In honor guard at the funeral were the leaders of the KGB, including the Committee's chairman. Orlov was buried in the cemetery Novokuntsevskom Moscow, next to the grave of Kim Philby.
In a letter written before his death, addressed to fellow spies, Orlov wrote: "I do not in any way regret our relationship. They were long and helped me grow as a person. All were tolerant and kind to me. I hope... you forgive me for what I did...or for not going to the last battle."
This echoes his earlier letter in 1988: "Russia was for me the place where I have lived in their dreams - a country fascinated me, despite the fact that I was sometimes difficult and lonely."

Revealing notice exposes Russia's strategic cable
Russian-Byelorussian notice to protect underground communication lines has an address and a phone number, which I had someone look up. A non-descript address in Minsk, Belorussia, connects it to a Belorussian front for Russian FSB's infrastructure management agency.
In other words, this is a Russian military cable access well.
